The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven is a unique, one-woman, site-responsive theatrical piece in which Jesus has returned to earth as a trans woman.
Written and performed by Jo Clifford (TAMING OF THE SHREW, EVE) – author of over 80 plays, Stonewall role model, Saltire Society Outstanding Woman, and one of Scotland’s most renowned playwrights – and directed by award-winning director Susan Worsfold (EVE, HEROINE).
Described as having “one of the most remarkable journeys in recent theatre history” (Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman) the play has indeed had an incredible journey over the last ten years since its premiere as part of Glasgay! at the Tron in Glasgow in 2009 - from being the subject of hate and abuse from a mass protest outside, to hundreds of critically acclaimed and sold out performances in the UK and Brazil and the resulting creation of a Brazilian version that has become the most talked about work in the country and is at the epicentre of the struggle against censorship and bigotry.
Queen Jesus Productions was established in 2015 to support the touring of The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven by founding directors Jo Clifford - writer and performer, director and designer Susan Worsfold and producer Annabel Cooper.
The team presented a successful Fringe run supported by Made in Scotland in 2015, then taking Queen Jesus on tour to Outburst festival in Belfast, Queer Contact in Manchester, and with British Council support to FIT-BH international festival in Brazil in 2016. Since then the work has been performed in part or whole in churches, pubs, theatres and festivals all over the UK, including a successful Creative Scotland-supported special Christmas run at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh in December 2018. The company was recently selected for the first Made in Scotland Festival in Brussels in June 2019.
In November 2019 Queen Jesus Productions presented a festival of performances and events in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the play and its remarkable journey - from the groundbreaking original production, to the Scottish premiere of the Brazilian production and a work-in-progress reading of a new play Untitled 2009, as well as discussions, workshops and a late night cabaret.
